Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix on HP Mini 1000
A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Netbook Remix on my HP Mini 1000.
I tried tried UNR (Ubuntu Netbook Remix) a few months ago on a virtual machine and really liked the interface. Installing it on my netbook took some consideration because I believe it voided my warrenty (I didn’t get any kind of extended warranty, so just the standard warranty). In the end, I decided I liked the interface enough, wanted to use the new EXT4 file system (which is supposed to be faster on solid-state drives) and everything else 9.04 has to offer. Most importantly though is always being up to date. With HP MiE, I assume I was only getting updates after they tested them, found no problems in the existing infrastructure and decided to release them. Overall it’s probably not a big deal to be a bit behind the times, but not when it comes to Firefox security updates and the like.
[UPDATE]: It’s probably worth mentioning that out-of-the-box sound does not work through the speakers (it’s noted here). There is an official bug submission related to the issue here, and possibly a fix some where. I haven’t gotten around to looking into this yet; sound works through the headphone jack and I guess sound through the speakers is just not something I require in a netbook.

I had a nightmare of a time getting netbook remix up and running for a trip abroad in a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to use it as a communication device skype/camera and for multimedia playback. I went back to the HP Ubuntu install for expediancy.
I don’t know about anyone else, but the workarounds floating around the web never worked for my 1000. It would be cool to have 9.04 tho’.

The only problem I encountered with 9.04 (although I never used Skype) was sound not working through the speakers–headphone jack it worked though. There is a fix out there, but it had numerous steps and I never wanted to invest the time…kept hoping a “one-click solution” would be posted by someone!
Although, now I’m running Windows 7 RC on my netbook–and it’s surprisingly fast (even boots in 30 seconds). Windows 7 RC takes 8 GB installed though, so there’s little room for much else. There were no driver issues–even sound works.
